Marvin Lewis is one of the best coaches that the NFL has today. Lewis is currently the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals and has been there since 2003. Prior to Marvin's arrival, the Bengals had only had 1 winning season in the past 15 years.
Lewis got started in football when he began playing in suburban Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended Fort Cherry High School in McDonald, Pennsylvania where he was a noteworthy quarterback and safety.
After high school, Lewis attended Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho, where he was a member of the school's football team, playing linebacker, quarterback and free safety.
In 1981, Lewis became a linebacker coach for Idaho State. While coaching at Idaho State, Lewis earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education in 1981 and a Master of Physical Education degree in athletic administration in 1982. Two years later, Lewis left Idaho State and became linebacker coach at Long Beach State University. He later held coaching positions at the University of New Mexico and the University of Pittsburgh.
In 1992, Marvin Lewis went to the NFL when he was hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers as linebackers coach. He then moved on to coach with the Baltimore Ravens and became defensive coordinator. The Ravens won the 2001 Super Bowl, with his defense strongly contributing to the victory. Lewis was clearly qualified and ready to become the head coach of a professional team.
In 2003, Lewis was hired as head coach by the Cincinnati Bengals, a troubled franchise that had not made the playoffs or recorded a winning record since the 1990 season and had a 2-14 record the previous season, the worst performance in team history.
In his first year as head coach, Lewis led the Bengals to a respectable 8-8 record. In the following season, Lewis decided to change quarterbacks and named Carson Palmer the new starting quarterback In 2005, the Bengals won the AFC North division with an 11-5 record, ending a league-high 15-year streak of not making the playoffs or having a winning season.
Currently, Lewis is one of seven black head coaches in the National Football League.
