Danny Wuerffel is a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback from the University of Florida. He won the prestigous award in 1996.
Wuerffel is a devout Christian and a member of the Presbyterian Church in America. He is known for his character both on and off the field.
Wuerffel is the son of an Air Force chaplain and grew up in the Destin area. At Fort Walton Beach High School, he won the Florida state football championship.
While in college, Wuerffel played quarterback for the Florida Gators under Steve Spurrier. His teams won 4 consecutive Southeastern Conference titles between 1993 and 1996. Wuerffel led the Gators to the 1996 National Championship and won handily 52-20 over their archrival Florida State University at the 1997 Nokia Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Danny Wuerffel broke almost every quarterback record at the University of Florida and many in the NCAA during his career. In 1996, he became the first athlete in the collegiate ranks to win the Heisman and Draddy (NCAA student-athlete of the year) trophies in a single season.
Wuerffel was not as successful in the National Football League, due to his lack of height and his tendency to throw the ball rather softly by professional standards .He played seven seasons in the NFL for the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, and Washington Redskins.
Danny however, was a star in NFL Europe. He won the MVP award in the 2000 World Bowl while playing for the Rhein Fire. The Fire beat the Scottish Claymores 13-10 ito win the championship.
After he retired from football, Wuerffel began working at Desire Street Ministries, a non-profit faith-based organization focusing on spiritual and community development in New Orleans.
Danny also speaks to college groups, such as the University of Florida Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Wuerffel also co-authored a book in 2004 called "Tales from the Gator Swamp". The book is about his football career at the University of Florida.
In 2005, Wuerffel's home and Desire Street Ministries were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. It has been well publicized that Danny wants to rebuild Desire Street Ministries and New Orleans.
