Grant Fuhr was the Edmonton Oilers first-round draft choice (eighth overall) in 1981 after an all-star season with Victoria of the Western Hockey League.
He made his NHL debut in 1982-83 and was a Second Team All-Star. Fuhr also finished second in the voting for the Vezina Trophy behind Billy Smith that year and received serious consideration for the Calder Trophy, which went to Dale Hawerchuk. He went on to become one of the winnigest goaltenders in NHL history.
Fuhr's arrival in the NHL coincided with Edmonton's rise to power in the league and the Oilers' great scoring ability allowed him to set a record for goaltenders with 14 assists in 1983-84. Though his goals-against averages were often high behind such an offensive-minded team. Fuhr earned a reputation as a goalie who would not surrender the big goal. He was at his best in the playoffs, helping the Oilers to win the Stanley Cup in 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988. The 1987-88 season also saw him win the Vezina Trophy and earn a selection to the First All-Star Team after leading the league in games played, wins, minutes and shutouts.
He missed the first 55 games of the 1990-91 season after being suspended by the NHL and was dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a multi-player trade on September 19, 1991. With the emergence of Felix Potvin as a star in Toronto in 1992-93, Fuhr was dealt to the Buffalo Sabres on February 2, 1993 for Dave Andreychuk. Fuhr shared the Jennings Trophy with Dominik Hasek for in Buffalo in 1993-94 but was sent to the Los Angeles Kings in a trade on February 14, 1995. His poor play in Los Angeles had many thinking his career was over, but he was signed by the Blues on July 14, 1995 and his career was revived.
The 1995-96 season saw Fuhr set an NHL record by playing in 79 games, including 76 in a row. He suffered a serious knee injury during the playoffs that year and once again it was thought his career might be over, but Fuhr returned to play 73 games in 1996-97. He was picked up by the Calgary Flames in 1999-2000, but suffered through what proved to be an injury-plagued final season.
