A Certified Construction Specifier, Edith has been a high achiever in the design and construction industry. She has served as a specifications writer and consultant for a number architectural and engineering firms; and worked with contractors, facilities managers and owners, during construction document preparation and contract management. In addition to U.S. projects, her work has included projects in Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, and the Philippines. Prior to becoming a specifications writer, Edith worked as a commercial construction contract administrator. She has taught construction document courses at two community colleges and the University of Toledo, College of Engineering.
In 1997, in recognition for her contributions to continuing education in the design and construction industry, she was elevated to Fellow by the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI). Edith became national President of the Institute in 2003. She was the first African-American president in the 60-year history of the Institute.
An avid reader, Edith has tutored non-reading adults and taught others to do the same. Although born in the hills of Kentucky, Edith grew up in the Midwest and attended college in the South. In addition to her professionar endeavors, Edith has worn many hats, to name a few --inner city kid, working college student, NFL wife, working mom, technical writer, corporate chief, foster mother, association leader, mentor, tutor, university instructor, and professional speaker. Edith is married to Clarence Washington, a construction project manager and former professional football player for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
