Daniel Levin is author of The Last Ember, the New York Times bestselling international suspense thriller where "archaeology is politics" and history is much more fragile than we think.
The idea for The Last Ember came to Levin while he was clerking for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Israel. He came across a case dealing with illegal excavation and theft of archaeological artifacts, and began researching similar cases around the world. He found that some of the largest sites of archaeological destruction were damaged for purely political purposes – simply as a way to erase the past — and then it occurred to him, what if someone was politically motivated to control – not the future, but the past?
In Levin's book, a young American lawyer in Rome discovers the true significance of an artifact in a client's collection. The discovery propels him and a beautiful UN preservationist into a coldblooded modern plot to redefine Jerusalem's history. Levin didn't always set out to be a writer. He earned his bachelor's degree in Roman and Greek civilizations, graduated Harvard Law School with honors. He was a visiting scholar at the American Academy in Rome in 2004 and practiced international law in New York.
Currently at work on his next novel, Levin says, "My primary goal was to entertain, so I hope readers have a great time with the story. I did writing it. Now if they happen to learn something they didn't know, then that's a great bonus."
