Shortly after his death, William Blair Bruce was proclaimed “the open-air painter par excellence, an enthusiastic lover of Nature in all her moods.” A Canadian by birth, this important painter of marine, landscape and genre subjects, spent virtually his entire career in Europe.
Bruce (or Blair-Bruce, as he was known in his adopted France) was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1859. He studied law and worked as an architectural draftsman before turning to art. In 1877 he studied at the Hamilton Mechanics Institute, then in 1881 he went to Paris, where he entered the Académie Julian. He was active in Paris and in Barbizon between 1881 and 1885 then briefly traveled back to his hometown of Hamilton.
He returned to Paris in January 1887 and spent the summer of that year at Giverny in the company of American painters Willard Metcalf, John Leslie Breck, Theodore Robinson, and Theodore Wendel and in proximity to the home of the great French Impressionist master Claude Monet. Bruce took his meals with the other artists at Giverny's Hotel Baudy, the “hotel for painters,” owned and operated by Lucien and Angelina Baudy.
Bruce married Swedish sculptor Caroline Benedicks in 1888. For the following decade the couple divided their time between Paris and the artist's colony at Gréz-sur-Loing, a village southeast of Paris, with intermitent visits to Hamilton, Stockholm, Venice, Lapland, and Corsica. In 1899 they settled permanently in Visby, Gotland Island, Sweden. Bruce died of heart disease in Stockholm on November 17, 1906. The following year, two retrospective exhibitions were mounted in his memory: one, at the Galeries Geroges Petit in Paris; and the other at the Academy of Arts in Stockholm, which featured three hundred of his paintings.
During his lifetime Bruce had exhibited at the Paris Salons and in London, Stockholm, Toronto, and Munich. His painting entitled The Forgers is in the collection of the National Gallery, Ottawa, Canada.
