Billy Sims was also the runner up for the Heisman Trophy in 1979. While at Oklahoma, Sims led the Sooners to two consecutive Orange Bowl titles in three straight appearances. In 1979, he scored two touchdowns in a 31-24 win over the University of Nebraska. In his final game, he ran for 164 yards to help beat Florida State 24-7. Sims ended his career at OU with 3,813 yards in only two full seasons.
Sims was the first overall pick in the 1980 NFL Draft. Sims spent five years with the Detroit Lions, and was Pro Bowl selection in 1980, 1981 and 1982. Sims finished his career with 1131 carries for 5,106 yards and 186 receptions for 2072 yards. His career ended prematurely when he suffered a serious knee injury against the Minnesota Vikings in 1984. It probably cost him a shot at the NFL Hall of Fame.
Sims is still a beloved sports figure in Oklahoma and in Detroit. Sims is now vice president with AmericaCan, a non-profit organization and is a part owner of Billy Sims Barbecue.
