Van Dyken was named the 1994 NCAA Female Swimmer of the Year, and in 1995 she won three gold medals at the Pan-American Games. With her sights on the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, the coaches of the US swim team closely monitored Van Dyken's preparation due to her asthma.
Van Dyken's lung capacity measured only two thirds of a normal person's at its best; at times, her lung capacity dipped to only a third. Despite the difficulties, Van Dyken qualified for five events for 1996 Games. After a tough fourth place finish the 100-meter freestyle, Van Dyken collapsed after the race due to leg cramps and breathing difficulties.
Despite this stirring scare, Van Dyken went on to post Gold Medal performances in the 100-meter butterfly and 50-meter freestyle. Her other Gold Medals came from the US relay teams in the 400-meter freestyle and 400-meter medley.
Van Dyken won three gold medals at the 1998 World Championships, but then faced major surgery for shoulder reconstruction.
