Cournoyer earned 10 Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens. He was named captain of the Canadiens in 1975.
Beginning in 1971, Cournoyer made the first of his four consecutive NHL All-Star Teams.
Cournoyer had a career high of 47 goals in 1971-72. In the final series against the Chicago Black Hawks he was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable playoff performer.
In 1982 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
