Walter McCarty is a retired forward who played in the NBA for 10 years. Walter played college basketball at the University of Kentucky where he was a part of the team that won the NCAA championship in 1996. He was selected by the New York Knicks with the 19th overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft. Walter played for the Knicks until October of 1997, when he was traded to the Boston Celtics. He played in all 82 games that season, starting 64 of them, and established career highs in virtually every category. Over the next few years, he was one of Boston's top options off the bench, often making a key defensive play or three point shot. He became a fan favorite in Boston for his gutsy play, hustle, and penchant for making the big shot. He was also a favorite of former Hall of Fame player and current announcer Tommy Heinsohn, who often exclaimed "I love Walter!" after some of his plays. Since joining the Boston Celtics in 1996, Walter was involved in every aspect of the team's community outreach including the Southwest Airlines/Boston Celtics Assists program, United Way of Massachusetts Bay, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Boston, the Big Brother Association of Massachusetts Bay, the Make-A-Wish Foundation and many others. In 2001, he became the first Celtic player to be recognized as the NBA Hometown Hero of the Month. Walter founded The I Love Music Foundation in September 2002 to promote the positive aspects of music and to support the growth of music for youth in the Greater Boston area, as well as his hometown of Evansville, Indiana. In June 2007, he accepted an assistant coaching job at the University of Louisville under head men's basketball coach Rick Pitino.
