Virginia Wade is considered the greatest tennis player in the United Kingdom ever. Virginia won the U.S. Championship in 1972, the first year of Open Tennis, and also in 1972 she captured the Australian Open.
She has been ranked as high as #2 in the world, and from 1967-1979 she placed in the top ten. With 839 wins, Wade is currently #4 on the all-time victory list.
When she won her Wimbledon crown in 1977, Queen Elizabeth II presented the trophy to her. Wade became the first and only woman ever elected to the prestigious Wimbledon Committee in 1982.
She is currently the Director of the Lawn Tennis Association Council and in 1989, she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
