Uwe E. Reinhardt has taught courses in both micro and macro economic theory and policy, accounting for commercial, private non profit and governmental enterprises, financial management for commercial and non-profit enterprises, and health economics and policy.
Professor Uwe E. Reinhardt received the Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada in 1964, when he was also awarded the Governor General's Gold Medal as Most Distinguished Graduate of his graduating class. Uwe E. Reinhardt received the Ph.D. in economics from Yale University in 1970. His doctoral dissertation was entitled Physician Productivity and the Demand for Health Manpower. In 1987 he received an honorary degree of Dr. Sci. from the Medical College of Pennsylvania.
Although Professor Reinhardt's research interests since that time have centered mainly on health economics and policy, his work has also included topics in corporation finance, including benefit cost analyses of the Lockheed L 1011 Tri Star and the Space Shuttle.
In 1978, Professor Uwe E. Reinhardt was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, on whose Governing Council he served from 1979 to 1982. At the institute, he has served on a number of study panels, among them the Committee on the Implications of For Profit Medicine. He currently serves on the Institute's Committee on Technical Innovation in Medicine.
During 1987-90, Professor Uwe E. Reinhardt was a member of the National Leadership Commission on Health Care, a private sector initiative established to develop options for healthcare reform. In 1988, he was elected President of the Association of Health Services Research (1989-90). He is currently a Trustee of the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association.
Professor Uwe E. Reinhardt has served on a number of government committees, among them the National Council on Health Care Technology of the then U.S. Department of Health and Welfare (1979-82) and the Special Medical Advisory Group of the then Veterans Administration (1981-85). He currently serves his third three year Appointment for the Physician Payment Review Committee, established in 1986 by the Congress to advise it on issues related to the payment of physicians.
Professor Uwe E. Reinhardt has been or is a member of a number of editorial boards, among them the Journal of Health Economics, the Milbank Memorial Bank Quarterly, Health Affairs, the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association.
