T. J. Chung is steering a new business unit for boat and pool table maker Brunswick Corp.
He's working to leverage the company's manufacturing and engineering expertise into the making of products and components that can be sold to other equipment makers. Right now, the business is only a blip -- expected to generate about $10 million in sales this year. But by building on current technologies, expanding into new areas and acquiring firms with technological expertise, Mr. Chung believes he can grow his technology unit to annual sales of $500 million to $1 billion within seven years.
It's an ambitious undertaking, but consistent with other major projects Mr. Chung has handled for Lake Forest-based Brunswick, including helping develop a new Mercury boat engine. The company has already started marketing engine control technologies developed in its Mercury marine engine business.
Reared in Singapore, Mr. Chung moved to the U.S. in the 1980s. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas, a master's degree in computer science from North Carolina State University and an MBA from Duke University.
After graduating, he held executive positions with the industrial motors division of St. Louis-based electronics manufacturer Emerson Electric Co. He reported to -- and impressed -- George Buckley, who left Emerson to join Brunswick in 1997 and recruited Mr. Chung the same year.
After overseeing systems conversions and helping Brunswick unload some camping and recreational equipment assets, Mr. Chung is helping position Brunswick for the future.
