The rescue of 33 miners from a collapsed mine in Chile has been compared to the first landing on the moon, for the way in which it captured the world's attention.
Over a billion people watched on television, and millions more viewed live video streams on the internet. With unprecedented media access, viewers became part of every stage of the rescue, which was in and of itself a triumph of engineering and collaboration.
The fact that all of the miners survived for 69 days and 700 meters deep--the length of 7 football fields-- below the earth's surface has been called a miracle. In addition to the faith and hope of the miners and the countless others engaged in their story, their survival is a testament to their own teamwork, organization, and discipline.
When the mine collapsed, the men had only rations enough for two days. For over two weeks, they didn't know if they would live or die or if anyone even knew where they were. Due to their impressive control, when the first borehole reached them 17 days later, they still had rations remaining.
Down below, decisions were made as a group, with each man having a vote. According to shift leader Luis Urzua, this contributed to the trapped men's sense of teamwork and their dedication to a common goal. "You just have to speak the truth and believe in democracy," said Urzua.
Everyone was given a job to do, and they worked as a team to keep up morale. Their decision to implement structure and calm in the face of such dire circumstances brought out the best in them and allowed them to be true partners with the rescue teams above ground.
