Tab Ramos is a retired American soccer player who currently serves as head coach of the United States U-20 team.
Over this thirteen-year professional career, Ramos played as a midfielder in Spain, Mexico, and the United States. The first player to sign with Major League Soccer, he spent the last seven years of his career with the MetroStars. He featured in three World Cups and was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2005.
Ramos was born in Uruguay and attended NC State, where he received his first cap for the US National Team in 1988 against Guatemala. Ramos also played in the 1988 Summer Olympics.
Ramos was named U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year in 1990 after his performance in the World Cup. That year, Ramos signed with the Spanish team Figueres, and then moved to Real Betis in 1992. In 1994, Tab once again played in the World Cup.
In 1995, Ramos became the first player signed with MLS, allocated to the future New York/New Jersey franchise, which became the MetroStars. He was loaned to the Mexican club Tigers and was the first American player to appear for the side.
Ramos scored one of the most important goals in US history in 1997, against Costa Rica in a 1-0 World Cup qualifier win. In 1998, he played in his third World Cup.
Ramos ended his career with 81 caps and eight goals. Ramos retired from soccer after seven years with the MetroStars from 1996 to 2002 as the last original member of the team. Ramos was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame on the first ballot, in 2005.
