Steve Cyphers serves as a reporter for ESPN’s news-gathering operation, particularlySportsCenter, Outside the Lines and ESPNEWS. His responsibilities include breaking news, providing investigative pieces and human-interest features. Cyphers first joined ESPN as a reporter in 1990 and rejoined the company in 2004 after teaching middle school in Grand Junction, Colo. for two years.
Cyphers, who has profiled many leading sports personalities for ESPN, captured a Sports Emmy Award in 1995 for a piece on Vanderbilt’s Brad Gaines and was recognized with an Edward R. Morrow Award for a 1994 feature on “The Play” (Colorado/Michigan football).
Prior to joining ESPN, he was a sports anchor and reporter at KSL-TV in Salt Lake City (1985-1990); sports director at WTVH-TV in Syracuse (1983-1985); sports anchor and reporter at KGUN-TV in Tucson (1982-1983); news/sports anchor and reporter at KELO-TV in Sioux Falls, S.D. (1981-1982); and sports director at KTVH-TV in Helena, Mont. in 1981.
Prior to his television career, Cyphers was a part-time football coach at Oregon State, Colorado State and Western State.
Cyphers was graduated from Western State College with a bachelor of arts degree in English.
