Spike Lee is one of the greatest filmmakers of our time. Having grown up in Brooklyn and unable to get a job in 1977, Lee bought a camera and shot everything that moved.
Over the next 10 years, he developed his unique style. However, Spike Lee wasn't always behind the camera. In one of his early movies, Lee was streetwise hustler named Mars Blackmon, which would be seen on a larger scale years later in NIKE commercials with Michael Jordan.
But, it was in 1989 with "Do the Right Thing" which made Spike Lee a household name. The film which explored festering urban racial tensions, won Lee a Best Screenplay Oscar nomination.
