Rudy Gay was born August 17, 1986 and is a professional basketball player who currently plays for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association. He played collegiately at the University of Connecticut before turning pro.
On July 1, 2010, Gay re-signed with the Memphis Grizzlies for a contract worth $82 million over 5 years.
On March 22, 2011 it was announced Gay would undergo season-ending surgery to repair a left shoulder subluxation sustained during a February 15, 2011 game versus the Philadelphia 76ers. At the time, Gay was averaging 19.8 points and 6.2 rebounds in his fifth NBA season while posting career highs in assists, steals, blocks, field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage, free throw percentage and minutes. As a result, Gay was forced to watch on the sidelines as the Grizzlies went on to clinch a 2011 NBA Playoffs berth and pull off a historic first round upset of the top-seeded San Antonio Spurs before falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games in the Western Conference Semi-Finals.
On January 31, 2012, Gay tied Shane Battier as the franchise's all-time steals leader while playing against the Denver Nuggets.
On January 30, 2013, the Grizzlies traded Gay to the Toronto Raptors in a three-way deal which included the Detroit Pistons. Gay set a franchise record by scoring 74 points in his first three games with the Raptors. The Toronto Raptors finished 34-48 and missed the playoffs.
On December 9, 2013, the Raptors traded Gay, along with Quincy Acy and Aaron Gray to the Sacramento Kings, in return for Greivis Vásquez, John Salmons, Chuck Hayes and Patrick Patterson. On June 22, 2014, Gay exercised his $19.3 million contract option for the 2014–15 season. On October 31, 2014, Gay scored 40 points in the Kings' 103-94 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. On November 19, 2014, he signed a three-year, $40 million contract extension with the Kings. On April 11, 2015, Gay was shutdown for the season with three games remaining after experiencing headaches due to a concussion he received when he had a collision with his ex-teammate Marc Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies. Gay had one of his best seasons in the NBA, averaging 21.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 68 games.
