The greatest base stealer and run scorer of all-time, Rickey Henderson was born on December 25, 1958 in Chicago, Illinois. He also holds the single-season record for stolen bases. In a 25-year career with nine clubs, Henderson's high on-base percentage, power, runs scored, and stolen base totals made him the premier leadoff hitter of his era; many consider him the best ever.
At the time of his last game in 2003, Henderson ranked among the sport's top 100 all-time home run hitters; he was also the all-time leader in walks with 2,190, a record since surpassed by Barry Bonds in 2007, although Henderson still holds the career record for unintentional walks with 2,129.
Henderson was the leadoff hitter for two World Series champions: the 1989 Oakland Athletics, and the 1993 Toronto Blue Jays. Henderson played for seven other teams during his career, including the New York Yankees, the San Diego Padres and the New York Mets. The only American League player to steal more than 100 bases in a single season, Henderson is the all-time stolen base leader for both the Oakland A's and the New York Yankees. He is one of three players in baseball history to have stolen bases in four separate decades. Henderson was a 12-time stolen base champion, and led the league in runs five times. He has the highest total of steals for any player before the age of 30, and is also the all-time stolen base leader after the age of 30.
Henderson will become eligible for the 2009 Baseball Hall of Fame.
