In his role as an academic physician he has authored numerous research papers and acted as co-investigator on NIH clinical research grants totaling more than 8 million dollars. He has extensive experience in preventive medicine and patient education, particularly in the area of hypertension and kidney and heart disease.
He also has been instrumental in creating charitable organizations involved in increasing understanding between children in different cultures, enriching the lives of elderly nursing home residents and helping to provide needed heart surgery for children who could not otherwise obtain it. Shulman also serves on the board of the Gesundheit Institute, founded by the real Patch Adams, MD. Through his prolific efforts in patient education and entertainment he has become well-known in the national and international medical communities.
