Emmy Award-nominated Mindy Kaling is a quadruple threat to be reckoned with. Kaling is an actor, writer, producer and director. She wore all these hats on the critically acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning show The Office. Additionally, she is a New York Times best-selling author and soon can be seen on her upcoming show, THE MINDY PROJECT, in which she not only stars, but also created, writes and executive-produces.
Kaling was most recently seen on the eighth season of The Office, in which she starred as Kelly Kapoor. Initially hired in 2004 as a writer and performer for the American version of The Office, she has written more than 18 episodes of the series, including Niagara, which scored her an Emmy nod. In 2009, she debuted as a director, with the episode Subtle Sexuality, and she subsequently was named an executive producer on the series.
The Office has been nominated and won multiple awards including: Writers Guild of America Awards, Television Critics Association Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Golden Globe Awards and Emmy Awards. Kaling was singled out when she was nominated for a 2008 Image Award in the Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series category for the Branch Wars episode of The Office. Most recently, The Office was nominated for a 2012 Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Furthermore, Mindy and the writers of The Office were nominated for a 2010 Writers Guild Award for Outstanding Achievement in Television in the Comedy Series category.
Kaling penned her first book in 2011, entitled Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns). The book was featured on the New York Times Best Sellers list as well as USA Todays Best-Selling Books list. The book is a collection of comic essays detailing moments from a womans life, including everything from relationships to fashion.
Kaling recently was seen on the big screen in The Five-Year Engagement, alongside Emily Blunt and Jason Segel. She appeared opposite Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher in No Strings Attached. Kaling also starred alongside Ben Stiller and Amy Adams in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. She made her film debut as the object of Paul Rudds unwanted affections in the Judd Apatow-directed comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin. She followed up by voicing the character of Tourist Mom in the blockbuster animated comedy Despicable Me. She also appeared in the films Unaccompanied Minors and License to Wed, starring fellow The Office actors John Krasinski, Angela Kinsey and Brian Baumgartner.
Her other television credits include playing Richard Lewis assistant on the critically acclaimed comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm. She was also a guest writer on Saturday Night Live and her stand-up comedy was featured on the CD Comedy Death-Ray.
Kaling is currently writing the screenplay for The Low Self Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie with fellow The Office writer Brent Forrester. In addition to co-writing the romantic comedy, she will also star in a supporting role and executive-produce.
She has been featured on Entertainment Weeklys list of the 10 Funniest Actresses in Hollywood. She was twice featured on Rolling Stones Hot List: once in 2007 as Hot Hyphenate, for writing and acting on The Office; and then again in 2009 for Hot Network Hope. She was most recently featured as one of Daily Varietys 10 Screenwriters to Watch.
Kaling plays the voice of "Disgust" in the Pixar film "Inside Out" (2015).
