Dr. Michelle R. Easton is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and received both her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and Doctorate of Pharmacy Degrees from Xavier University of Louisiana. Her scholarly interests include student and practitioner professionalism and recently she co-authored an “Excellence Article” on Student Professionalism for the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Dr Easton has served as moderator, presenter, and small group facilitator for workshops and seminars on professionalism. In addition to her responsibilities as Assistant Dean for Professional and Student Affairs and interest in professionalism, Dr. Easton has provided instruction on therapeutic issues related to psychiatric and neurological disorders, over the counter products, and the History of Pharmacy course for freshman and first year professional pharmacy students.
Prior to joining the School of Pharmacy at the University of Charleston, Dr. Easton served as the Director of Experiential Education at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. In this position, Dr. Easton's primary role was to develop, coordinate, and maintain the experiential portion of the curriculum. While at Hampton University, Dr. Easton served as faculty advisor to the Hampton University Pre-Pharmacy Club and as faculty liaison to the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) and the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) student chapters.
As a practicing pharmacist in various settings, Dr. Easton has served as profession as pharmacy manager, preceptor, and coordinator of several community based health initiatives in retail pharmacy environments. She especially enjoys working with the public and has presented over 30 health related seminars to numerous community groups and organizations. Presentations on healthy living, drug abuse, smoking cessation, enhancing therapeutic outcomes, mental health issues, providing high quality care to the underserved, professionalism, and pursuing a career in pharmacy are among her favorite topics to present to various audiences at health fairs, career days, or other health promotional activities.
Dr. Easton volunteers her time and talents to several worthy organizations and most recently worked closely with a coalition of Hampton Roads Area Community Health Centers, free clinics, agencies on aging, and the major health systems to secure funding to develop and support an infrastructure to provide pharmacy services and medications to the underinsured and underserved populations in the community. Dr. Easton has completed a specialty residency in psychiatric pharmacy practice at the Medical University of South Carolina teaching hospitals in Charleston, South Carolina and is licensed to practice pharmacy in the states of Louisiana and Virginia. She is a member of several national pharmacy organizations including: life membership in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP); Association of Black Health-System Pharmacists (ABHP); American Institute on the History of Pharmacy (AIHP); American Pharmacists Association (APhA); American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP); College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacy (CPNP); the National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA); Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists (VSHP); and Virginia Pharmacists Association (VPhA). Dr. Easton has been appointed by the Governor of Virginia, the Honorable Mark Warner, for a four year appointmen,t to serve as a member of the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and the Virginia Department of Health Professions until 2006 and 2007 respectively.
