Matthew Weiner is the series creator and executive producer of Mad Men, an AMC original series. Since its debut, the series has garnered four consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series; three consecutive Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Drama Series; a Peabody Award; three Producers Guild Awards; four Writers Guild Awards; AFI Awards for one of the Top 10 Outstanding Television Programs of 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010; both the 2008 BAFTA Award and 2008 Royal Television Society Award for International Program; and five Television Critics Association Awards, including Program of the Year. Weiner has also won Emmys for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for the pilot, “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” the second season finale, “Meditations in an Emergency”, and the third season finale, “Shut the Door. Have a Seat.” Weiner also achieved a Directors Guild nomination for his efforts behind the camera on “Meditations in an Emergency” in season two, and the season three finale, “Shut the Door. Have a Seat.”
Prior to Mad Men, Matthew was executive producer and writer on The Sopranos, the critically acclaimed drama series on HBO. Along with the other executive producers, The Sopranos won the 2004 and 2006 Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series and garnered Matthew an Emmy nomination with co-writer Terence Winter for outstanding writing in the episode “Unidentified Black Males.” Weiner earned another Emmy nomination in 2007 for writing the episode “Kennedy and Heidi” with David Chase. He also won a 2007 Writers Guild Award for the series and three PGA Golden Laurel Awards for Television Producer of the Year in Episodic.
Before working on The Sopranos, Matthew wrote for various television series, including The Naked Truth,Becker, and Andy Richter Controls the Universe. He also wrote and directed his first independent feature,What Do You Do All Day?
Born in Baltimore and raised Los Angeles, Weiner studied philosophy, literature, and history at Wesleyan University. He also earned his MFA from the University of Southern California School of Cinema and Television. Weiner currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife and four sons.
