She was able to rise up the social ladder and, by the time basic schooling was completed, Manon was well established. Settling in at a designer store called Pyrate Style, she entered the fashion industry initially as a maker of leather items.
During a new marketing campaign at Pyrate Style, Von Gerkan was asked to model for one of their catalogues. At the shoot, a top modeling scout from Germany's biggest agency took notice of her. Soon a deal was struck and it didn't take long for Von Gerkan to abandon her ambitions for the glamour of modeling.
Interestingly enough, when she wished to expand her horizons and try her hand at modeling in the United States, she accepted her VISA for entirely different reasons. A lover of motorcycles, Von Gerkan moved to the U.S. in order to get her license as quickly as possible -- laws in Germany were more stringent. Of course, the prospect of modeling in New York must have been promising as well.
It didn't take long for Von Gerkan to establish herself. Magazines were the first to really get the word out: she appeared on international covers of Self, Shape, and Elle in 1995-'96. She followed that up with a breakthrough appearance in Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue in 1996, and more features in Vogue and Glamour.
Despite this print publicity, it was the seasonal fashion shows that became this model's bread and butter. Von Gerkan strutted her stuff for big names like Moschino, Ferragamo and Gianfranco Ferr. Other designers began to take notice and soon, fashion magazines were placing her among the most elite models in the world.
To cement her position in the industry, Von Gerkan took up several advertising campaigns in the late '90s as well. Chanel booked her for its ads for Chanel Coco perfume, Victoria's secret had her wearing lingerie and L'Oral secured her drawing power as well. Von Gerkan soon became wrapped up in the fast-paced fashion industry, doing numerous shows and print ads simultaneously.
When activity slowed down after the millennium, Von Gerkan did not let up. She decided to open a vintage jewelry store in trendy SoHo, New York, and began selling pieces to big names like Jean Paul Gaultier. She tried acting too, getting a small role in the movie Shallow Hal, and appearing in four episodes of the TV show A Nero Wolfe Mystery. These projects, and her budding relationship with magician David Blaine, began to consume a lot of her time.
She enjoyed much time in the spotlight in September and October of 2003, when Blaine decided to hole himself up in a transparent cubicle in London and fast for 44 days. Von Gerkan was his biggest supporter and fought against many of the onlookers who decided to taunt him. Whether through her boyfriend's antics or by her own sexiness and business sense, Von Gerkan is sure to stay in our lives for years to come.
