An American football outside linebacker for the San Diego Chargers of the National Football League, Larry English was born on January 22, 1986. He was drafted by the Chargers 16th overall in the 2009 NFL Draft and is the highest drafted player out of Northern Illinois. He started with his career during his high school where he was named the team co-captain, MVP, and First-team All-Suburban Catholic Conference both as a junior and senior. He continued this activity in college playing for the Northern Illinois where he was a medical redshirt in 2004. In 2006, he was a First-team All-MAC selection and in 2007, he was the Mid-American Conference's MVP and was chosen as the First-team All-MAC and a Fourth-team All-American. In 2008 season, he won the Vern Smith Award, given to the MAC's top player. He was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year by the MAC News Media Association and the Sporting News. At the 2009 NFL Draft Combine, English got a score of 34 on the aptitude assessment Wonderlic Test. This is actually one of the highest scores ever recorded for his position, Outside Linebacker, and the 9th highest score of the 2009 NFL Draft Class. He was drafted by the San Diego Chargers and was ranked 16th overall. In his college days, he was a defensive end but the team Chargers highlighted that he will become an outside backer in the NFL. Aside from these activities, he was also serving as the honorary chairman of the American Lung Association inaugural Fight for Air Climb in San Diego in the year 2011.
