Famous for his soft hands, strong arm and fiery personality, Larry Bowa won two Gold Glove Awards and led the NL in fielding percentage a then-record six times. When Bowa retired, he held the National League record for career games at shortstop (2222) and Major League records for career fielding average (.980) and for a single season (.991 in 1979). Bowa was also among the career leaders in assists (6th, 6857) and double plays (4th, 1265). Though most of his records have been broken, Bowa still retains the NL career fielding average mark.
Bowa was also a fine offensive player for a shortstop. He batted .280 or better four times (including a career high .305 in 1975) and had nine seasons with 20 or more stolen bases. Bowa provided solid reliability in the Phillies' infield from his rookie season of 1970 through 1981, along with third baseman Mike Schmidt. With this solid left half of the infield, the Phillies reached the postseason five times from 1976 to 1981. Bowa batted .333 in a losing cause in the 1978 NLCS, but played an even greater role in World Series Championship season of 1980, hitting .316 in the NLCS and .375 in the World Series. It was the Phillies' first Championship title in franchise history.
Bowa returned to the Phillies as a mangaer in 2001 and won the Manager of the Year honor after bringing the team close (two games) to the NL East title after finishing in last place the year before (2000). Bowa resigned in 2004 and has accepted a job as a coach with the New York Yankees.
Bowa has also served as an on-set analyst for ESPN's Baseball Tonight and even a co-host for a baseball talk show for XM Radio.
