Joker Phillips, Jr. was born on May 12, 1963. He is the head coach for the University of Kentucky Wildcats football team. He played as wide receiver for the University of Kentucky Wildcats for three years (1981 until 1984). He played for two seasons in the National Football League for the Washington Redskins after his college years and then played next for the Toronto Argonauts. His coaching career started after in the NFL when he became a graduate assistant on the Kentucky football team. He was promoted in 1990 to be the assistant recruiting coordinator and became the wide receivers coach the following year. He was hired as wide receivers coach again but this time at the University of Cincinnati in the year 1997. In the next two seasons, he made stops at Minnesota, Notre Dame, and South Carolina then he became a wide receiver coach at Notre Dame. He returned to his alma mater to serve as recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach. In 2004 season, he was named offensive coordinator of the Wildcats. In his first full season as offensive coordinator, Kentucky won in the 2006 Music City Bowl. In 2007, Kentucky won again in the Music City Bowl as well as winning in 2008 Liberty Bowl. He was named as Brooks' successor and this title was then changed into "head coach of the offense in the year 2008. In 2010, he was called the head coach of the Wildcats. He is also the second African-American head football coach in the SEC and the third African-American head coach of a major sport at UK.
