Radical thinking: Retail companies are queuing up at India's door and waiting for it to open. Earlier this year, the Indian government said it planned to invite foreign investment in the sector, and the world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart Stores (nyse: WMT - news - people ), is champing at the bit for a piece of the action. Currently foreign retailers are only allowed to operate through franchises on the subcontinent, but Wal-Mart International President and Chief Executive John B. Menzer wants to open stores in India so his company can source more products from the country. Wal-Mart already sources textiles and accessories from India and operates a procurement center in Bangalore. After meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Menzer explained to reporters that setting up shop in India would be a nifty bit of bridge-building: "If I have an opportunity to bring stores into the market, we will get better knowledge and close cooperation with our supplier," he said, according to the Associated Press. Other retailers who are salivating at the prospect of India's $180 billion retail market include Chanel, U.K. emporium Marks & Spencer and Germany's Metro.
