"Our experience teaches us that if you let too few people get a grip of all the money and power, they'll use it to choke off the rest of us."
Jim worked his way through college by serving as the assistant general manager of the Denton Chamber of Commerce, and in 1964 he was named a management trainee of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. After graduating with honors from North Texas State University with a degree in government, he completed a year of graduate study in international affairs at Columbia University . Hightower moved to Washington in the late 1960s, where he worked for the Congressional Research Service, served as legislative aide to U.S. Senator Ralph Yarborough, and tackled rural development issues for the Rural Housing Alliance.
In 1976 he returned to Texas to edit the Texas Observer, a role which earned him the Texas Farmer's Union 's "Outstanding Journalism Award" in 1979. In the years between 1980-1991, he served as president of the Texas Consumer Association, Texas Agriculture Commissioner, chair of the National Democratic Party's Agriculture Council, and twice addressed the National Convention delegates. He was profiled on CBS's 60 Minutes and has been listed by the National Journal as one of the 150 individuals from outside the federal government "who make a difference in the nation's capital."
Since 1991, Hightower has built up a significant national radio presence for left-of-center politics. Hightower Radio has become the "Chat & Chew Café" of the airwaves--always connecting issues to the money and power behind what's usually reported in the media, discussing issues in a civilized way, dispensing information and exhorting listeners to stand up for what's important to them. Hightower, in true American fashion, has bolstered the great tradition of "government of the people, by the people" through hard work, leadership, and talk radio.
