Born on May 31, 1946, Jim Bates is a former American football coach in the National Football League. During his high school days, he earned 10 varsity letters in 4 sports before accepting the offer to play for the Tennessee football team. Bates was recently named to the school's athletic hall of fame.
His coaching career started with the Tennessee Volunteers in 1968 as a graduate assistant. For the next three seasons, he was serving as the head coach at Sevier County High School before the collegiate ranks with the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in 1972. The following year, he was coaching the Villanova Wildcats and the linebackers coach in 1974. He spent two seasons as the linebackers coach at Kansas State Wildcats. He also became the secondary coach at West Virginia Mountaineers in 1977 and also to the Texas Tech Red Raiders and later he was promoted as defensive coordinator from 1980 until 1983.
His professional career as a coach began in the USFL with the San Antonio Gunslingers. He then resigned after 12 games. In 1989, he was serving as a Linebackers Coach for the University of Tennessee. He was hired as the defensive coordinator for the Florida Gators football team. In 1991, he started with his NFL coaching career with the Cleveland Browns, became the defensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons in 1994 and returned to Brown in 1995. The next year, he was working with the Dallas Cowboys as linebackers coach and was promoted to be the assistant coach after two years. In 2000, he was serving the Miami Dolphins. It was in 2004 when he had his first coaching job in the NFL as the interim coach for the Miami Dolphins and became the defensive coordinator with the Green Bay Packers.
