Jeff Van Gundy is currently an ESPN NBA broacaster as previously been the head coach of the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets in the National Basketball Association.
"JVG", as he is called in Internet fandom, created a memorable scene in the 1998 NBA Playoffs series between the New York Knicks and the Miami Heat. When the Heat's Alonzo Mourning and the Knicks' Larry Johnson engaged in a violent, bench-clearing brawl, Van Gundy unsuccessfully tried to break up the fight. He was knocked down, hung on Mourning's leg and held on for his life while Mourning dragged him across the floor. This has become a hallmark scene in the intense Knicks-Heat rivalry.
In another incident, Van Gundy tried to stop Marcus Camby from punching the San Antonio Spurs' Danny Ferry. Ending up, Van Gundy collided with Camby and the coach needed 12-15 stitches to close a wound above his left eye.
Jeff Van Gundy was one of the most popular Knick coaches of all times, and the Madison Square Garden fans would frequently chant his name during games.
Following his firing from the Rockets in 2007, Van Gundy was a guest analyst for ESPN's broadcast of the Phoenix Suns-San Antonio Spurs game in San Antonio, Texas and has since been a broadcaster for ESPN. Van Gundy now calls many basketball games as a color commentator with play-by-play announcer Mike Breen, including the NBA Finals.
