Known as a mobile, fluid quarterback, Jeff Blake who is now retired was a sixth round pick in the 1992 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, coming out of East Carolina University where he set or tied 32 school records. He helped ECU win the Peach Bowl in 1992 in an amazing 4th quarter comeback.
Blake's best Pro seasons came with Cincinnati in the mid-to-late 1990's; he established great rapport with Bengal receivers Carl Pickens and Darnay Scott. Though Blake had his share of limitations as an NFL quarterback, he was widely regarded as the owner of the best long ball in the league.
His only Pro Bowl appearance came with the Bengals, when he was selected as the starting quarterback for the AFC team. In that contest, he threw a Pro-Bowl record-long 92 yard touchdown pass to Yancey Thigpen. His contract with the Bears expired at the end of the 2005 season, and the Bears filled his spot on the roster with Kyle Orton.
At the end of his 13 year career, Blake amassed 21,711 career passing yards, with 134 touchdown passes, and 99 interceptions. Blake has run for 2,027 career rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. His longevity had been legitimate, as shown by his 100 career starts.
