During J.D.'s tenure as president, JGR has won three Cup Series Championships, with Bobby Labonte in 2000 and Tony Stewart in 2002 and 2005.
Also during J.D.'s time as president, the team has expanded from a one-car operation, with the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet, to a three-car team that fields the No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet and the No. 11 FedEx Chevrolet. The team also fields two Busch Series entries, the #18 Vigoro/Home Depot Chevrolet and the #20 Rockwell Automation Chevrolet.
In addition to the Nextel Cup and Busch Series efforts, J.D. oversees a successful diversity and driver development program. The JGR/Reggie White Diversity Program was formed in 2003 with the late Reggie White, an NFL defensive standout from 1985-2000. The program is entering its' third successful year with drivers Aric Almirola, competing in a full Truck Series schedule and partial Busch schedule this year, as well as Marc Davis, a 15-year-old who will compete in NASCAR-sanctioned Late Model stock car races around north Carolina.
JGR also has a driver development program with 15 year old Joey Logano and 24-year-old Woody Howard. Both Logano and Howard will compete in the Pro Cup Series for 2006.
J.D's experience in racing is not limited to the management side, however. He made five Busch Series starts in 1998 and 1999 and five starts in the Craftsman Truck Series in 2000. Prior to that, he competed in the Busch North Series as well as the Late Model stock car series at several tracks in North Carolina. He also served as an over-the-wall pit crew member during the first few years of JGR and was a tire-changer for the team's first win, the 1993 Daytona 500 with Dale Jarrett.
Prior to working in racing, J.D. played football at The College of William and Mary. He wore No. 11, the number of the FedEx Chevrolet, from 1987-90 as a defensive back and quarterback.
During J.D.'s time at William & Mary, the team made the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs twice, and posted a school-record 10-win season during his senior year.
J.D. lives in Davidson, N.C. with his wife, Melissa, and their four children, Jackson, Miller, Jason Dean and Zachary Taylor.
