Janet Mock is a writer and activist who creates, critiques, and contributes to media in an effort to expand society’s limited portrait of womanhood. A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Janet founded the Twitter project #GirlsLikeUs which aims to raise the diverse visibility of trans women, travels the country speaking about gender justice. Janet has appeared on MSNBC, HLN’s Showbiz Tonight and In the Life and her commentary has been featured in The Telegraph, NPR, London Times magazine, Sirius Radio, BuzzFeed, Loop21, Colorlinesand TakePart Media. In 2012, Janet fulfilled a dream when the Sylvia Rivera Law Project – an organization created in the legacy of Janet’s personal hero Stonewall Riots veteran and transgender activist Sylvia Rivera – honored her for her advocacy. She was also named one of The Grio’s 100 most influential people in 2012,Sundance‘s Top 10 LGBT voices, Huffington Post’s LGBT History Month Icon of the Day, and a nominee for a GLAAD Media Awards and the first-ever Women’s Media Center Social Media Award.
