Recording his first album, 11, when he was only, well, 11,Harry Connick Jr. matured into a young man whose hunky good looks brought him legions of adoring female fans despite declamations by critics that his piano playing was inferior, his voice limited, and his material stale. With his Frank Sinatra-style swing vocals and quirky piano playing, Connick first gained a following in his late teens with an eponymous 1987 career debut of jazzy instrumentals. After releasing his 1988 follow-up, 20, Connick broke into the pop charts with his soundtrack for the 1989 romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally. The next year Connick released two albums within weeks of each other, the vocal-oriented We Are In Love and the instrumental Lofty's Roach Souffle. After touring with a big band, Connick released 1991's Blue Light, Red Light which featured his vocals accompanied by his 14-piece tour band. Following a more traditional 1992 album, 25, Connick contributed to the soundtrack of Sleepless in Seattle, but failed to score another When Harry Met Sally-style breakthrough. Later that year he unimaginatively released an collection of Christmas standards. Although the quality of his more recent recordings is often brought into question, Connick continued selling respectably with 1994's She and 1995's Star Turtle.Perhaps Connick was channeling more of his energy into acting -- since 1990 Connick devoted an increasing amount of time to acting, appearing in movies such as Copycat (1995) and the miserable Independence Day (1996).
