Although Hakeem Olajuwon played for the losing team in the final game of the1983 NCAA Tournament, he won the Player of the Year award. Soon after, he was selected by the Houston Rockets in the 1984 NBA Draft. Olajuwon was considered the top amateur prospect in the summer of 1984 over future NBA stars Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and John Stockton.
Olajuwon was nicknamed "Hakeem the Dream". During his rookie season he finished as runner-up to Michael Jordan in the 1985 Rookie of the Year voting. He averaged 20.6 points, 11.9 rebounds and 2.68 blocks.
Oaljuwon helped the Houston Rockets win the NBA championship in 1994. It was an impressive seven-game series against the New York Knicks. Olajuwon shined in game 7 with a game-high of 25 points and 10 rebounds. This was the first pro sports championship for Houston since the Houston Oilers won the AFL championship in 1961.
Houston won the title again in 1995 and Olajuwon was Finals MVP one more time. Olajuwon was the only player in NBA history to win MVP, Finals MVP and Defensive Player of the Year all in the same season.
In 2001 Olajuwon was traded to the Toronto Raptors where he would play his final NBA season and retire as one of the greatest players of all time. Soon after Olajuwon's retirement, his #34 jersey was retired by the Houston Rockets.
