Born on October 1, 1983, Eric Lee Shanteau is an American international swimmer. In his early times, he attended Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia, where he became a national swimming champion. In his college days, he swam for the Auburn University where he was an 11-time All American. He won a silver medal in the 2003 World University Games and won a gold medal during the 2005 World University Games. This event made led him to be the first American to sweep both events. His professional career started during the 2004 United States Olympic Trials in Long Beach, California where he ranked third in the medley events. In the 2008 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials he placed second for the 200-meter breaststroke. He still competed for the Summer Olympics despite him being diagnosed with cancer. The following season in the U.S. National Championships and World Championship Trials in Indianapolis, Indiana he placed second. He qualified to swim all three of his individual events at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships in Rome. In the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, the qualifying event for the U.S. Olympic team, he made the U.S. Olympic team by finishing second in the 100-meter breaststroke. During the year 2012 Summer Olympics held in London, he earned a gold medal by swimming the breaststroke leg tournament for the winning U.S. team. He won two gold medals as a member of winning United States relay teams at the World Championships.
