Ed Susman is a freelance medical writer based in West Palm Beach, Florida. He began his journalism career at age 15, writing sports reports for this hometown newspaper, The Saratogian in Saratoga Springs, New York. He worked on that small upstate community daily for several years while going to college at Syracuse University. While at Syracuse, he also worked at the daily Syracuse Post-Standard. At graduate school at the University of Missouri, he received a faculty appointment as graduate assistant/night city editor at the Columbia Missourian, the community daily that is the teaching newspaper at the University of Missouri. Following college, he went to work at the now defunct Hartford Times, holding positions as City Editor, Copy Desk slot man, Capitol Bureau Chief and numerous other posts. When the Times folded, he began an 18-year career as a reporter and editor at The National Enquirer in Lantana, Florida, where, he was first introduced to medical writing and reporting, and was sent to international medical meetings by the supermarket tabloid. He specialized in coverage of cancer, heart disease, and arthritis. He has won awards from the University of Missouri for coverage of campus events and from the Connecticut Chapter of Sigma Delta Chi-Professional Journalism Society for feature writing; and for directing breaking news coverage and direction state government reporting. Since parting ways with The Enquirer in 1995, he has worked as a freelance writer for United Press International, Oncology Times, Neurology Today, Neurology Now, the Medical Post of Canada, Investigative Drugs Journal (United Kingdom), EuroHospital (Belgium), Health and Lifestyle, Medscape, MedPageToday.com, Doctors Guide on the Internet and scores of other magazines, newspapers and websites. He has also written four books and contributed chapters to others. One book, 'Multiple Sclerosis', explains the disease to teenagers; another 'Belly Busters', gives weight loss suggestions. In February of 2007, he and a group of freelance writers established a website dedicated to medical news, aiming at a broad market appeal. Medical Front Page features the work of the freelancers as well as contributions from physicians and others. Much of his work can be found on-line in hundreds of major, minor, obscure and quirky websites
