After growing up in Chicago and attending Marquette University, Dwyane Wade was the 5th overall NBA draft pick in 2003. In his first year with the Miami Heat, Dwyane was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. Dwyane went on to lead the Heat to their first NBA Championship in franchise history in 2006 and was named the NBA Finals MVP. For nearly two years, Dwyane had the top-selling NBA jersey. Dwyane became the first player in NBA history to accumulate at least 2,000 points, 500 assists, 100 steals, and 100 blocks in a season. In his nine seasons in the league, Dwyane is already an eight-time All Star, a seven-time All-NBA team selection, a two-time NBA Champion, a two-time Olympic medalist, a Sportsman of the Year and the winner of the 2009 NBA Scoring Title.
Wade is well known off the court as well through his philanthropic involvement in various organizations. In 2003, he established The Wade's World Foundation, which provides support to community-based organizations that promote education, health, and social skills for children in at-risk situations. He hosts a variety of community outreach programs in Chicago and South Florida. In 2008, he announced his partnership with former teammate Alonzo Mourning's charitable foundation and co-hosted ZO's Summer Groove, an annual summer event.
Wade recently released his first book, A Father First: How My Life Became Bigger Than Basketball. His memoir details his childhood and how he came to be top name in basketball as well as his experiences raising his two sons as a single father, after the Chicago court awarded him sole custody.
