Actress and broadcast journalist Donna Hanover received a degree of prominence in 1994 as the wife of New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. During her tenure as First Lady, she sponsored a number of health and educational causes around the city and was active in the citys civic life. Married in 1984, Hanovers marriage to Giuliani started to end after reports of her husbands affairs. The couple finally divorced in 2002 shortly after Giuliani left office. Hanover and Giuliani have two children.
As actress, Hanover, who made her debut in the 1986 Sidney Lumet-directed Power, has been frequently cast as journalist like in films Running on Empty (1988), The Dream Team (1989), Ransom (1996), Celebrity (1998), Light It Up (1999) and Jus Kiss (2002). She also has played various characters in such movies as The Siege (1998), Superstar (1999), Keeping the Faith (2000), Someone Like You... (2001) and Noel (2004). On the small screen, the Oakland native is perhaps known for her roles in such series as Another World (1997), As the World Turns (1999), One Life to Live (2000) and Law & Order (1997-2004). A former radio and television reporter in Florida and Pennsylvania, Hanover is now the morning show co-host for WOR radio in New York.
A graduate of Stanford University and Columbia Universitys Graduate School of Journalism, Donna Hanover was a radio and television reporter in Florida and Pennsylvania when she decided to move with her politician husband, Giuliani, to New York in the 1980s.
Continuing her journalism career, she found herself becoming the lead newscaster for the 10 p.m. news bulletin on WPIX channel 11 in New York during the 1980s, but had to leave that role during Giulianis failed 1989 bid for mayor. Meanwhile, Hanover irregularly appeared as an actress in films like Sidney Lumets Power (1986, as a commentator) and Running on Empty (1988, as a reporter) as well as Howard Zieffs comedy The Dream Team (1989, as a field reporter).
In 1994, Hanover became famous for being the First Lady of New York City. As the wife of New York mayor, she supported a variety of educational and health causes around the city and was actively involved in the citys municipal life. Aside from her duties as First Lady, she was an anchor on the Food Network and a features journalist for local station WNYW (channel 5). She also appeared in many films such as the biopic The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), costarring with Woody Harrelson, Courtney Love and Edward Norton, Ron Howards Ransom (1996), in which she appeared as a WNYW reporter opposite Mel Gibson, Lumets Night Falls on Manhattan (1997, as TV Newsperson #1), Woody Allens Celebrity (1998, as Manhattan Moods Anchor Woman), the Denzel Washington vehicle The Siege (1998, as District Attorney), the Andy Garcia-Andie MacDowell romance Just the Ticket (1999, as Realtor ), the comedy Superstar (1999, portrayed Mrs. Corrigan) and the drama Light It Up (1999, as Fox News Anchor). On the small screen, Hanover could be seen as Judge Ellen Landregan in Another World (1997) and Claire Wentworth in As the World Turns (1999). She also guest starred in an episode of Sex and the City (1998).
Entering the new millennium, Hanover appalled some portions of the nation by receiving the lead role in the controversial Off-Broadway play by Eve Ensler The Vagina Monologues (2000) whose topic range from childbirth to orgasm to rape. The budge raised eyebrows not only due to the subject matter, but also because the playwright is a close friend and supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton, who was running for the U.S. Senate against Giuliani. She delayed her performance days after her husband publicized he has prostate cancer.
After appearing in a 2000 episode of Ally McBeal, Hanover took on small roles in films the comedy The Intern (2000), Another Womans Husband (2000, TV), director-actor Edward Nortons Keeping the Faith (2000), Love Lessons (2000, TV), Series 7: The Contenders (2001), Julie Johnson (2001), Someone Like You... (2001, starred Ashley Judd, Greg Kinnear and Hugh Jackman) and Just a Kiss (2002). She simultaneously appeared on episodes of Family Law (2001), Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001), The Practice (2002), and had a regular role, as Dr. Elyse Hanson, on One Life to Live (2000). She also played Judge Deborah Burke in several episodes of Law & Order (1997-2004). Hanover returned to filmmaking in 2004 to join Susan Sarandon, Paul Walker and Penlope Cruz for the drama film Noel, helmed by Chazz Palminteri.
