At school he struggled and by the time he was 16 years old had been expelled from school, spent a night in jail and had a criminal conviction from an appearance in a juvenile court. He managed to get into another school and two years later sat his A levels which he subsequently failed badly.
David Thomas left school as further education was absolutely out of the question and did an office job which he hated. At the tender age of 20 he joined the Fire Service. He struggled in an all male environment having not had a male influence in his life. But he came through it and came to love the job. He sat his promotion exams and failed them badly. He assumed that promotion was not for him.
Memory Skills At the age of 27 David was watching television one evening and saw a guy memorise a pack of playing cards. He was stunned and immediately saw the power. A short while afterwards he went out and spent £6 on a memory book. He found he could improve his memory quickly and painlessly through technique, practice and application. For the first time in his life he had discovered something that he was really good at.
World Memory Championships Inside 12 months of buying the memory book David entered the 1996 World Memory Championships. He came 4th at his first attempt and became one of only four International Grandmasters of Memory in the world at the time. In 1997 he returned to the WMC and came 3rd. He also hugely improved his Grandmaster score.
Guinness Book of Records® On the 1st of May 1998 David once again tested his abilities at the very highest level by breaking a Guinness Book of Records® memory record that had stood for 18 years. He recited from memory the mathematical formula of Pi (3.14159 etc.) to 22,500 digits. He was delighted as it raised his self-esteem while commanding respect from others.
Speaking David soon moved into the area of passing on his knowledge and experience to other people. He felt this was essential as he now was enjoying a quality of life that he had never even known existed and it was his duty to let others have an insight into that too. He began by teaching in the Fire Service and then moved into the general business arena. Within a short space of time he was being asked to do keynote speeches at conferences and conventions as meeting planners saw the marketable benefit of what David brought to a convention. This was also more money for less work. This appealed to the Yorkshire side of David, as it would to us all! He left the Fire Service in December 1999 and is now a full time professional speaker, author and businessman, travelling round the world talking to all kinds of groups from the public and private sector.
