David Quammen is a science journalist and author who travels on assignment to jungles, deserts, and swamps. His beat is ecology, evolution, and conservation. His dozen books include three novels, four essay collections, and the nonfiction titles The Song of the Dodo (Scribner, 1996), Monster of God (W.W. Norton, 2004), and The Reluctant Mr. Darwin (W.W. Norton, 2006). Quammen has received an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a John Burroughs Medal for nature writing, and three National Magazine Awards for essays and other short work. He is a contributing writer for National Geographic and writes for Harper’s Magazine and other publications. He recently finished a three-year term as Wallace Stegner Professor of Western American Studies at Montana State University. His current book project involves the ecology and evolution of scary viruses.
