David P. Norton is the preeminent authority, along with Robert Kaplan, on how to institutionalize strategic thinking using The Balanced Scorecard (BSC). And he is the cofounder, president and CEO of the Balanced Scorecard Collaborative, the consulting firm that helps organizations use the BSC successfully. Norton was founder and president of Renaissance Solutions, a global consulting organization with more than 6500 employees in 100 global locations.  Formerly, Dr. Norton was CEO of the Nolan Norton Institute, a consulting firm he co-founded, which became the research arm of KPMG. As the story goes, David Norton coined the term "Balanced Scorecard" in a conversation with John Thompson, then president of IBM Canada.  John was back from a round of golf, and declared that he needed a scorecard just like the one he used during his golf game to measure the performance of his business. "Balanced Scorecard" is cited as one of the most powerful management ideas ever by Harvard Business Review. He is coauthor, with Robert S. Kaplan, of The Balanced Scorecard: Translating Strategy Into Action (Harvard Business School Publishing, 1996), and The Strategy-Focused Organization: How Balanced Scorecard Companies Thrive in the New Business Environment (Harvard Business School Publishing, 2000), and three articles on the Balanced Scorecard in the Harvard Business Review.  

Dr. Norton earned his doctorate in business administration from Harvard University, an MBA from Florida State University, an MS in operations research from the Florida Institute of Technology, and a BS in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
