Carlette "The Truth" Ewell was born on August 20, 1971 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA. Her love for boxing began at a tender age when she and her father would sit in their living room on Saturday nights to watch boxing on TV. Some of her favorites in the sport were Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Jerry Cooney, Larry Holmes, and her two all-time favorites Muhammad Ali and Carl "The Truth" Williams.
In 1985-1986 Ewell received the MVP Award for Basketball at her High School. She also ran on the all-county track team in 1986-1987. After transferring from Glenn High School, she lettered in Chorus / Music in 1988-1989 at RJ Reynolds High.
After participating in Toughwoman contests and winning the North Carolina Toughwoman championship in both 2000 and 2001, Carlette decided to turn to pro boxing.
She made her pro debut on April 20, 2002 in Greensboro, North Carolina, winning by TKO at 1:00 of the second round over Denise Grant, another debut fighter.
