In 2010 Brian David Johnson became Intel Corp.'s first futurist, a time-honored title bestowed on prognosticating technology mavens dating back to the likes of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. The future is Brian David Johnson's business and his charter is to develop an actionable vision for computing in 2020. His work is called "futurecasting" which, he adamantly states, is not about predicting the future. But rather determining a vision of the future that he and Intel can then work to build. To do this he uses ethnographic field studies, technology research, trend data, and even science fiction to provide Intel with a pragmatic vision of consumers and computing. Along with reinventing TV, Johnson has been pioneering development in artificial intelligence, robotics, and using science fiction as a design tool. The bottom line of all of this work, though, is Johnson's passion for getting people to build their own futures.
Johnson writes extensively about future technologies for international scientific papers and articles (The Wall Street Journal, Slate) and appears frequently on Fox News, PBS, Digits and CNET. He is a sought after lecturer for global universities, governments and militaries. Johnson is prolific writer of both science fiction and science fact with titles like Fake Plastic Love [2007], Screen Future: The Future of Entertainment Computing and the Devices we Love [2010], Science Fiction Prototyping: Designing the Future with Science Fiction [2011], Vintage Tomorrows: A Historian and a Futurist Journey through Steampunk and into the Future of Technology [2012] and Nebulous Mechanisms: The Dr. Simon Egerton Stories [2013]). He has directed two feature films and is an illustrator and commissioned painter.
