Bernard Harris became an astronaut in July 1991, and is the first African-American to walk in space. He began working at NASA's Johnson Space Center as a clinical scientist and flight surgeon, where he developed countermeasures for extended periods of space flight and performed clinical investigations of space adaptation.
Harris was a mission specialist on STS-55, and conducted research in physical and life sciences with the crew of Spacelab D-2. He also flew on board Columbia for ten days, contributing to the its one year of total flight time. During this flight, Harris spent over 239 hours and traveled 4,164,183 miles in space.
Bernard Harris served as Payload Commander on STS-63, the first flight of the new united Russian-American Space Program. The crew's assignments included meeting with the Russian space station Mir, operating a variety of investigations in the Spacelab module, and the deployment and retrieval of Spartan 204.
