Anna Maria Chávez is a lawyer, celebrated speaker, and award-winning thought leader. She has been named one of FORTUNE’s World’s Greatest Leaders and was named number 22 by Fast Company in its 2014 annual list of the most creative people in business. She brings a wealth of experience from legal, public policy, non-profit management, and brand management positions in Arizona, Texas, Washington D.C., and New York City.
From 2011-2016, Chávez was the first woman of color to lead the iconic Girl Scouts of the USA in their 104-year history with 2.7 million members over 90 countries in the world and 59 million Girl Scout alumnae in America today.
Her experiences growing up in rural Arizona lit a passion for public service that has defined her education and career paths.
Chávez’s desire to make the world a better place led her from her hometown to Yale University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree before pursing a juris doctorate from the Jame E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona. She has since been admitted to the Bar of the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, the Arizona Supreme Court, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Chávez worked for nearly a decade on aging issues in her home state of Arizona. While serving in Gov. Janet Napolitano’s administration as Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, she launched the governor’s Aging 2020 initiative and created the Arizona Division of Aging and Adult Services. Prior to that, she served as Assistant Director of the Division of Aging and Community Services.
