Andrea Duran made her debut for the U.S. national softball team during the World Championships here in 2006. Since then, she has developed into one of the premier defensive third basemen in the world and steady bat in the lineup. Duran recently sat down with NBC Olympics at Nike headquarters and shared eight things about herself that people may not know.
Andrea Duran has her own holiday, so to speak, in her hometown. "I have my own day," she said. "When I got back from Beijing in 2006 for the World Championships, Selma High School decided to retire my number. So after that ceremony, they decided to give me my own day in Selma. It's September 7. My sister sends me cards every year to wish me a Happy Andrea Day."
Duran says if she weren't playing softball at the Games, there are a few sports she wouldn't mind competing in here. "I would definitely want to do swimming because I used to do it and like to watch it," she said. "I think what Michael Phelps is doing is incredible. To have a goal like that is pretty awesome. I don't know if I could swim 17 races and eat like 10,000 calories a day. As softball players, if we did that we'd all be 500 pounds because we don't have two workouts a day like swimmers do. I also would like to do rhythmic gymnastics. I think it's interesting. And synchronized swimming. We traveled with them and I was thinking about how these girls never touch the ground and they have to throw themselves in the air. It's the craziest thing in the world. You wouldn't look at them and think they were Olympic athletes but knowing what they do, I think it's incredible. You have to be an athlete to tread water for that long and then do all that stuff in the air."
