World-Renowned Poet Nikki Giovanni Speaks at the DeCoursey Lecture Series

Earlier this month, world-renowned poet Nikki Giovanni was on the campus of Trinity University for an important speaking engagement.  On October 10th, she was the latest presenter for the DeCoursey Lecture Series. 

The series brings top names from the science and humanities fields to Trinity.  This was Giovanni's second visit to the campus. 

Inside of Laurie Auditorium, Giovanni talked about life and life experiences.  She went to other campus events as well, including a session with poetry students. 

Giovanni is a well-known poet who came to prominence during the Black Arts Movement in the 1960's.  During the next decade, she expanded to writing children's literature and founding a publishing company. 

Giovanni is currently a Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech.  She has previously taught classes at Queens College, Rutgers and Ohio State. 

Giovanni was nominated for a Grammy Award for the Nikki Giovanni Poetry Collection.  She is the recipient of the Langston Hughes Medal and the NAACP Image Award.
