Whole Foods CEO John Mackey has built one of the most successful grocers in the country from the ground up. He was able to share his insights about the industry earlier this month at the Southeast Produce Council 2018 Southern Exposure Expo and Tradeshow.

On March 3, Mackey addressed the crowd assembled in Tampa, Florida about Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods. He was interviewed by CNN correspondent Alison Kosik during the presentation.

Mackey said that the produce industry can do a better job with marketing. He also said that diets like ketogenic and paleo are not based on science.

In 1980, Mackey co-founded Whole Foods as a single store in Austin, Texas. The now Fortune 500 company now boasts over 400 stores and 87,000 employees.

Whole Foods has been named one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" by Fortune magazine for 18 straight years. Mackey was named Ernst & Yount Entrepreneur of the Year in 2003.

Over the years, Mackey has been one of the most powerful advocates for the organic food movement. He is also an outspoken supporter of the free market and is a co-author of the bestselling book, Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business.
